Through the Looking Glass or Into the Woods?

November 1, 2018

While wood is the more common—and oldest—cabinetry option, it finds a strong competitor in glass. Both materials are distinct in their own fashion, aesthetics, styles, and color combinations. One might work where the other would not. This blog is hardly didactic: it won’t tell you if you should choose one from wood or glass, but it will only explain the pros and cons of using either material to help you decide.

Glass

Intricate and beautiful, glass is a material many opt for, especially when it comes to kitchens. They allow you to see through them and look even better with lighting, but here’s what to keep in mind before making that final decision: The Good: Glass is fairly more stylish and there’s a lot that can be done with it in the style element. It also allows you to have more free space around since you can put many of your decorative items or fancy cutlery inside the see-through glass cabinets. Lastly, they help you in easily finding things which greatly saves time, so they have a practical purpose to serve. The Bad: Glass is also fairly hard to keep clean and takes up a lot of time and effort to do so. It doesn’t mean that cleaning the glass is hard (it is though if the glass hosts intricate designs), but that you’ll have to do it more often. Glass isn’t difficult to maintain but it is high maintenance since it is vulnerable—especially if you have children. Additionally, if your plan is to stuff everything inside a cabinet with glass exteriors, you will have to keep everything intact, all the time. Clutter will to be avoided.

Wood

Wood Here’s what you need to keep in mind when opting for wood: The Good: They are available in a variety of styles, textures, and colors. They can also be painted over. Wood is easy to customize. Harder and tougher than glass, it will definitely last longer. The Bad: Wood is slightly more expensive than other options and customized pieces take a little time in being manufactured. With the seasonal changes in temperature wood can shrink or expand.
